US PRESIDENT OBAMA MUST VETO BILL ALLOWING FOR
INDEFINITE DETENTION WITHOUT TRIAL - ICJ

Geneva, Switzerland - The International Commission of Jurists (ICJ) today deplored the passage of legislation by the United States House of Representatives that would allow for the indefinite imprisonment of terrorism suspects, detained anywhere in the world, without charge or trial. The ICJ considers the legislation to be incompatible with international law, including human rights principles, and calls on US President Barack Obama to veto it.

Alex Conte holdt oplæg over disse to nye domme ved et seminar, ICJ Danmark var vært ved tidligere på ugen, under titlen "Ten Years after 9/11: Lessons Learned in Human Rights and Counter-Terrorism".

Ten Years after 9/11:
Lessons Learned in Human Rights and Counter-Terrorism

As we near the 10th anniversary of the terrorist attacks of September 11th, we invite you to join us on the morning of 10 August 2011 to hear from experts in the field, regarding the impact of counter-terrorism measures on the protection of human rights. Specific topics will include the similarities and differences between the Bush and Obama administration policies, recent European Court of Human Rights decisions (e.g., al-Skeini and al-Jedda), accountability for state conduct, and considerations for practitioners developing detention and other counter-terrorism policies.

Pakistan must withdraw obstructive and legally impermissible reservations to core international human rights treaties, Amnesty International and the International Commission of Jurists said today.

European Sections of the International Commission of Jurists Newsletter June 2011

Welcome

Welcome to the first edition of a newsletter for the European Sections of the International Commission of Jurists (ICJ). The purpose of this newsletter is to:

  • Provide information on the work being undertaken by the International Commission of Jurists.

  • Provide information on the work being undertaken by the European sections and affiliates of the ICJ with a view to keeping them mutually informed of such activity and, thereby, encouraging new sections and new initiatives.

  • Encourage debate on European developments in relation to human rights and transnational arrangements within the European Union such as the European Arrest Warrant and proposals for further mutual recognition in criminal matters within the EU.

  • Provide a readable and informal newsletter which sections could, if they wished forward to their members and supporters.

  • Encourage dialogue between the central concerns of the ICJ and those of its national sections in Europe.

The intention is to explore whether sections find this kind of information useful either for internal use or for distribution to their members and networks. The newsletter has been compiled by JUSTICE and contains submissions which have been offered for this purpose. Some contributions are short summaries of work undertaken. Others are more lengthy. To minimise work, some contributions (such as that from the ICJ and JUSTICE itself) are copies of documents originally produced for internal use in reporting to committees of one kind or another. Because of this, the reports cover different time periods. The diversity of sources means that the newsletter is rather rough and ready. However, using material prepared for other purposes considerably eases the task of pulling it together.

The newsletter is the first of two that will be published as an experiment in 2011. The second will be published In December and the date for the submission of content will be the end of October. The newsletter is edited by Roger Smith, director of JUSTICE, the British ICJ section. Feedback would be really useful, as would offers of content for the next edition, please contact Denne emailadresse er beskyttet mod programmer som samler emailadresser. Du skal aktivere javascript for at kunne se adressen. . It would also be interesting to know whether sections were able to use this material eg in any kind of report to members.

Regards

Roger Smith, JUSTICE, London 13 June 2011
